Skie’s Interviews - FLWS 2006
This year’s TxDLA Fall Leadership Workshop was held September 27th through the 29th in Galveston, Texas, at the magnificent Moody Gardens Hotel and Convention Center.
Forty-seven
people attended this two and a half day workshop, some were leaders when they arrived; everyone else took on leadership roles before the workshop was over. Take a few moments to listen to some of the reflections of those who attended, courtesy of Skie
VanDerKampf, TxDLA’s roving reporter.

Human Bingo
“I-19”…..no it’s not an interstate cutting across Texas; it’s a call out during Human Bingo, a brainchild of Ken Conn, TxDLA President and leader of the workshop. And you thought bingo was for old folks and gamblers. Guess again, my fine feisty friend. This bingo game had attendees lunging through space, sometimes ending up sprawled across the floor, diving to get into seats to get five in a row. What a great way to get people together……literally!

Laurel
Mayo
You never know who’ll you see at Casey’s Seafood Restaurant… Laurel Mayo enjoyed a dinner out with the other Fall Leadership Workshop Attendees at the end of a long and productive first full day. Listen to
her comments and please notice the tone of her voice and how
Laurel's excitement and enthusiasm seem infectious. I know that after two minutes with
her, I felt like I needed to see the doctor – I wanted to capture it in a pill.

Cindy Smith
Full of life and determination, Cindy Smith came to Galveston for one reason: to make a difference. And she did, and she will, and now she has nowhere to run and hide……we will find you Cindy. Wrap your ears around her words and tell me, “Don’t you want to be here in the spring to meet her?”

Ken Rosier
After leaving San Antonio last spring, Ken Rosier had made a decision. No, it wasn’t that TxDLA is for loonies; it was this: I am going to throw myself headfirst into the mix and take an active role in this organization. Even though Ken’s counting skills are nothing to brag about, his passion for this organization is heroic. Check it out.

Allison Pierce
Que pasa, bonita? Yep, you could ask that question to Allison Pierce if you wanted, but why not listen to what she has to say about last year’s spring conference and this year’s Fall Leadership Workshop? Hear how the spring conference affected this distance learning teacher and how that impact was translated into a series of day-long, interactive, multiple-site Spanish lessons across the state. “Hijo de la guava!”

Willis Chun
Who says you can’t teach a new dog old tricks! Willis Chun came forth, representing
i-2-i, a TxDLA sponsor, and poked his head out into the wild and wacky world of distance learning. All work and no play makes Willis a dull dog, so give a listen and you’ll see that Willis in no dull dog, and neither is
TxDLA!

Laurie Hogle:
You’d think she had no business being here, with planning the spring conference devouring most of her waking hours. How contraire, Pierre! This monument of movement, this paragon of penultimate persistence, this fine filly of frugal fiduciary finagling came here to recharge her batteries in the electrical environment enveloping everyone. As President-Elect, Laurie shares her thoughts on the Fall Leadership Workshop and the Spring Conference. Whatta gal!
