The Texas Distance Learning Association Board of Directors recently approved the recommendation by the Hall of Fame Selection Committee to name Dr. Kevin R. Eason as the 2012 Texas Distance Learning Hall of Fame honoree. Dr. Eason was officially inducted into the Hall of Fame on April 16, 2012 during the opening general session of the 2012 Annual TxDLA Conference held in Dallas, TX. The Texas Distance Learning Hall of Fame Award recognizes long-term distance-learning practitioners or advocates whose careers are characterized by exceptional commitment, outstanding achievements, and enduring impact in the field of distance learning.
Dr. Kevin Eason exemplifies these traits with his 28-year career, which has focused on distance education. Eason, who joined Tarrant County College District’s (TCCD) distance education program in 1984, has been promoted through the ranks and currently serves as Director of Distance Learning for the district, a position he has held for five years. Eason’s professional commitments focus on distance education. He served on the Coordinating Board’s Distance Education Advisory Committee and on the Texas Association of Community College’s eLearning Council, which provides oversight to the Virtual College of Texas and STARLINK.
Eason has long been involved with innovative initiatives with TCCD as well as professional associations. Throughout his tenure with TCCD a commitment to excellence has been foremost in his mind. Kevin was responsible for co-authoring and developing the Online Training and Course Development Program used at TCCD, he oversaw implementation of a quality review process for online courses, and worked to get Standards of Excellence for Online Courses adopted at the college in 2003. Eason has developed and taught several online courses for TCCD, Eastfield College, and the TeleCollege at Dallas County Community College District.
Eason assisted in two large grant projects, totaling more than a million dollars, for TCCD’s distance education program. These projects included numerous aspects of distance learning such as: (1) working with a programming company to develop an open source learning management system (LMS) which was used by the college for over eight years, (2) installing videoconference classrooms on each campus, (3) allocating stipends to faculty for course development, and (4) providing laptop computers for faculty. Eason is currently directing a district-wide effort to implement Blackboard as the LMS used across TCCD. This two-year project involves developing Blackboard as the college’s LMS to support all courses, student organizations, and committees, as well as phasing out LogiCampus, the system used to deliver online classes, and CampusCruiser, the system used to support face-to-face classes.
Dr. Eason is a TxDLA Past President and Board Chair, and currently serves on the Board of Directors as the Vocational/Technical Education representative. Eason was also the Vice-President Elect of State Chapters with the United States Distance Learning Association.
While president of TxDLA, Eason co-chaired a committee assigned with a comprehensive review and rewrite of the association’s Bylaws. These Bylaws were adopted by the membership and remain in place today. While serving on the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s Distance Education Advisory Committee, Eason chaired a subcommittee in 2007-2009 that rewrote the Coordinating Board’s rules pertaining to Distance Learning and Off-Campus Courses. Throughout this two-year project Eason involved distance learning practitioners from across the state to ensure the rules were current and relevant. The rules were approved and implemented in January 2010.
“Dr. Eason has served TxDLA in numerous capacities over the years, but beyond that he has used his professional expertise and keen interpersonal skills to foster relationships with members that may not be actively involved, encouraging them to expand their areas of expertise and serve the TxDLA membership in a leadership role,” noted the nominator.
Dr. Eason is currently the Director of Distance Learning at Tarrant County College District.
It is truly a privilege for the TxDLA Board of Directors and the Hall of Fame Selection Committee to honor Dr. Kevin Eason with induction into the Texas Distance Learning Hall of Fame.
