| Global Voices: An Open Invitation To The Global Education Conversation
- Vicki Allen |
| Using amazing new voice technologies, classrooms can connect across distances and engage in collaborative projects using synchronous and asychronous voice interaction tools like Yackpack, Skype, Vaestro, Springdoo, and others. This session presents examples of successful classroom exchange projects and discusses collaborative projects which develop literacy skills and content area knowledge. In this workshop, participants will be able to use these tools to create audio blogs and voice messages, search for global partners, and investigate examples of successful interactive podcasting and voice over IP (VOIP) classroom exchange projects. We will discusses reasons why education leaders should encourage these types of collaborative projects to connect students across geographical and cultural boundaries and to develop student literacy skills as well as content area knowledge. |

| Going the e-Distance with High School Students
- Pamela Dooley |
| Today’s learners, the “Net Generation,” has high expectations for learning and are naturally geared toward online delivery. However, as educators begin to integrate new learning technologies, they are faced with unique challenges for instructional design, motivation, and accountability.
Northside ISD, a nationally recognized technology leader, addressed the needs of its 21st Century learners with a recent pilot of a distance education course for high school students. This program offered a special opportunity for learners across several San Antonio districts to enroll in a course that may not have been offered on their campus or fit their class schedule.
With the success of this program, NISD has planned to expand distance learning (DL) opportunities not only for their students, but also as a broader community outreach program. Special efforts are underway to develop a systematic process for timely implementation of additional DL courses with their most innovative educators.
One such educator, Pam Dooley, the Health Careers High School CIT, shares the experiences, trials and tribulations with establishing the pilot program, a Web Mastering Online course, and meeting expectations of students, administrators, technology coordinators, and parents. In addition, she provides an opportunity for hands-on interaction with some of the more effective tools in the NISD Moodle learner management system that made this course a success. |
