Pre-conference Workshops
Half-day hands-on sessions that feature a more focused, in-depth exploration of a particular distance learning topic. These workshops will be held Monday, March 24, 2008 from 2 pm to 5 pm.
Pre-registration and additional fee required.
1. Need for Speed! Rapid eLearning Development on a Shoestring Budget
$50
Description: Distance educators are always searching for tools to create engaging course content Faster, Cheaper, Easier! In this hands-on workshop, you will work with five cutting-edge freeware or low-cost technologies that enable you to create multimedia content and interactivity, for delivery through your local learning management system.
2. Second Life - What Is It, How Does It Work, and How Can I Get One?$50
Description: This workshop provides an introduction to Second Life (SL) - a multi-user virtual environment (MUVE)- and the implications and opportunities it presents for education at all levels. After discussing the concept of MUVEs and their increasing relevance and importance to the Education industry, all attendees will have the opportunity to create a personal Second Life avatar and learn the basics of navigating the Second Life virtual environment. We will then explore “the grid" to identify educational opportunities and resources. The session will conclude with a discussion focused on issues and ideas for early implementation that may be useful to educators beginning a professional Second Life.
3. Teaching and Learning 21st Century Literacy Skills with Digital Storytelling$50
Description: Educators at all levels can use Digital Storytelling to teach 21st Century Literacies, such as conducting research and synthesizing large amounts of information, while gaining the expertise in the use of digital communication and authoring tools; help students organize their ideas as they learn to create stories for an audience, and present their ideas and knowledge in an individual and meaningful way. Participants will engage in storytelling of their own and leave with a handful of resources.
4. Captivating!
$50
Adobe Captivate makes it possible to quickly design web based educational demonstrations, simulations and evaluations. Participants in this hands-on workshop will capture still and motion screen images, record audio and create quizzes using this captivating software. This workshop is ideal for e-learning professionals, web developers and distance learning instructors.
