TxDLA members Tommy Bearden, Shane Howard, and Roxanne Glaser were honored with NDLW Awards at the CILC Symposium in Indianapolis, IN on November 13, 2007. Texas was well-represented!

Shane Howard won the Support for Education by a non-profit organization 

Tommy Bearden won the Student Driven Projects award for "Cotton: Plant of Many Uses!"

Roxanne Glaser won the Collaborative Project award for "Monster Match" (http://www.edlink12.net/monstermatch)

Roxanne also won the Professional Development for Educators award for "MysteryGuest IVC Showcase" presented at the ESC XI Distance Learning conference.

COSI Columbus won the Content Provider award and ATT and Tandberg shared the For Profit support award.

Robert  Wright has been appointed Acting Director of Biomedical Communications at the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth. He has served in various positions in the Biomedical Communications Department since September 2002.

Robert was also recently elected President-Elect of the Association of Biomedical Communications Directors and will take office in June, 2008.

Darcy Hardy has announced that the 2008 USDLA Conference will be held April 20-23 at the Hilton at the Ballpark in St. Louis, MO.

Laurie Hogle, TxDLA President, has announced that Kevin Eason has been elected as TxDLA Chairman of the Board and will begin serving in this capacity immediately. According to TxDLA Bylaws, Kevin will serve as Chair for the remainder of his term on the Board, subject to his consent each year to continue in that role, and subsequent affirmative vote of the Board.

Brenda Quintanilla has taken a position as an Instructional Designer and Director of the Course Design Center at Lee College, Baytown, TX. Prior to this job move, Brenda was an Instructional Designer for San Jacinto College - South Campus in Houston, TX. Brenda is an active member of TxDLA and is the Program Chair for the upcoming 2008 TxDLA annual conference.

TxDLA member Ron Rushing has accepted a position as Manager of Videoconferencing Operations for the Telehealth Group at UT-MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Rushing said of his new position "It is a exciting opportunity, working for an energetic organization such as MD Anderson. It was a difficult decision, moving from the piney woods of East Texas. I'll eventually get used to the cars here in Houston. I am looking forward to again becoming involved with the TxDLA organization."

Rhonda Blackburn, TxDLA President-Elect, has taken a position as Assistant Provost for Academic Assessment and Support Services at University of Texas at Dallas. In making this career move, Blackburn said "It not only is an amazing opportunity, but I finally have a chance to live with my husband, present TxDLA member, Chris Bigenho".

TxDLA has learned that Matt Lawyer, past TxDLA Treasurer and current member, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, June 23, 2007. Matt was currently employed as a Technology Consultant at the Birdville ISD. Tentative plans are for a memorial on Wednesday, June 27, and the funeral on Thursday, June 28. Details (time/location) will be posted as this becomes available.

Irving ISD and the University of North Texas received news that their Teaching American History grant project proposal for 2007-2010 was funded for $984,400.  The program is designed to raise student achievement by improving teachers' knowledge and understanding of and appreciation for traditional U.S. history.  Other partners include the National Council for History Education, the Amon Carter Museum and the Southwest Branch of the National Archives.   More details about this Department of Education grant program and funding awards are available at http://www.ed.gov/news/pressreleases/2007/06/06212007a.html

TxDLA Past-President and USDLA Executive Vice President/President-Elect Marci Powell has left her AT&T position as a Director of Education Advocacy. As of June 15th, she has taken on the role of Global Education Market Manager for Higher Education at Polycom. Marci said, “I can’t believe I am leaving such an amazing company and wonderful people, but the opportunity presented itself and I felt I couldn’t let it pass me by. I will work out of my home and travel when needed both nationally and internationally.”

TxDLA members, Terry Gibbons (Temple ISD) and Paula Yezak (Temple ISD) will be assisting robotics instructors in a week long workshop at Texas Tech during June 24-29, 2007. The focus of this workshop is to acquaint K-12 teachers in integrating robot design products into their classroom curriculum.
