00:28:25 Scott Williams: It’s me! 00:28:39 Scott Williams: And it was my daughter, so I’m not a 7-year-old girl! 00:28:57 Scott Williams: :) 00:29:26 Laresa Trusty: I'm from Texas A&M Central Texas in Killeen. 00:29:35 Scott Williams: Weatherford College - Currently from home in Fort Worth 00:29:49 Laresa Trusty: Better than last week! 00:33:06 Rhonda Blackburn: Make sure you chat in any comments or questions you have for Twyla and Melissa during the presentation. 00:37:19 Charlene Stubblefield: Is anyone else familiar with Transparent Design? 00:37:31 Laresa Trusty: I love that! How I feel about it as well! 00:37:41 Rhonda Blackburn: It is so important to make sure what you are doing is transparent! 00:38:09 Scott Williams: I’ve never heard it called transparent design, but I am familiar with these concepts and do them in my classes, especially online. 00:38:11 Rhonda Blackburn: Definitely @Laresa! 00:38:34 Laresa Trusty: Is it like, don't make them spend their resources on figuring out what you want? 00:38:57 Rhonda Blackburn: @Scott, I love the name transparent design, but like you, I have never heard it call that! 00:39:26 Scott Williams: Pretty much that - my students definitely need to see why they are doing the different parts of it. I have found that things work more smoothly since I have made my reasoning more explicit. 00:40:29 Charlene Stubblefield: How effective is this on undergraduate students? 00:40:53 Scott Williams: I’ve never tried Jigsaw, but I don’t know how I would do this with my intro community college students. 00:41:05 Laura Sheehy: Will the ppt be available with the recording? 00:41:20 Laura Sheehy: Great Points! 00:42:17 Laura Sheehy: YAY!!! 00:43:11 Rhonda Blackburn: Hi Essie, glad you could join us! 00:48:35 Rhonda Blackburn: Love these progressive case studies! Need to figure out how to do that with my class! 00:54:15 Rhonda Blackburn: I love concept mapping!!! 00:55:18 Rhonda Blackburn: has anyone else use concept mapping to teach their course content? 00:57:00 Scott Williams: I have never used concept maps before. I have brought them up to students as a way to take notes, but I’ve never created an assignment that uses them. 01:02:46 Rhonda Blackburn: This is a great way to help students reflect on their assessments! I bet you can also use a template like the exam template to go through a rubric or authentic assessment! Hmmmm… making me think!!! 01:04:50 Scott Williams: I have used voice recorded comments before, but I have two hesitations - 1.) it takes a lot of time and requires a quiet place to do them (I have 4 kids, so it is hard to get quiet time). 2.) I worry about the need to close caption audio and video. 01:08:46 Laresa Trusty: We use Studio with Canvas and the CC is very accurate. 01:08:58 Scott Williams: Yeah, close captioning is up to me at my community college. 01:09:48 Laura Sheehy: Our campus has invested in Panopto which auto captioning and easy editing of captions and videos. Students can also use it for recording assignments. 01:10:57 Scott Williams: I use screencast-o-matic, and I like it’s close captioning. I was using the verbal feedback in Canvas Speed Grader, where there is no place to add feedback. I could record them separately and upload them, which would allow me to add captioning. 01:11:45 Scott Williams: Sorry, no place to add captioning in Speed Grader, not feedback - mistype 01:15:58 Rhonda Blackburn: Do you ever do group sessions? 01:17:22 Scott Williams: That is my own personal weakness - I have yet to figure out how to use groups well in online classes. - My hybrid classes use grouping successfully, but I can’t get them to work well in online. That would definitely be something I’d love to see a TxDLA session on at some point. 01:17:56 Rhonda Blackburn: That is a great suggestion, Scott! 01:20:36 Scott Williams: Grouping online is going to be even more important now, since we don’t know if we are going to even be able to have groups in person, so even my hybrid classes might need online grouping. At least they will at least be able to see the people they group with at some points if we can meet on campus. 01:21:52 Rhonda Blackburn: I think you can do this in a synchronous meeting depending on what tool you are using. Have the class come together and then separate them into their groups and you can visit each one to see if there is any guidance they need! 01:22:32 Scott Williams: Synchronous can definitely work for moving my hybrid class online, but synchronous is much harder with a fully online course, as there is not really a time when all students can come together. 01:23:09 Rhonda Blackburn: I teach a completely online course and use Doodle Poll to see when the students can all meet! It has worked really well the past few years! 01:23:28 Scott Williams: I’ll have to try that 01:23:45 Rhonda Blackburn: Or, you can do a survey at the beginning of the semester to see what is the best day / time people can meet! 01:23:49 Scott Williams: I have generally tried to stay away from any synchronous parts for my online courses. 01:23:57 Rhonda Blackburn: would love to hear how it works! 01:24:18 Rhonda Blackburn: I used to as well, but it has really taken my class and student performance to that next level! 01:24:35 Rhonda Blackburn: I only do it 3-4 times during my 12 week class. 01:25:57 Rhonda Blackburn: If you want to talk more about how I do this, let me know - rblackburn91@gmail.com 01:26:09 Harriet Watkins: That's good. Authentic teaching 01:26:38 Rhonda Blackburn: Yes, I love authenticity! Making sure we all know we are REAL! 01:27:46 Scott Williams: Thanks @Rhonda. I am going to explore over this summer, as things are definitely going to be different going into the fall. 01:28:10 Lisa Tomsio: Such a great session! Thank you both Twyla and Melissa! 01:28:56 Laresa Trusty: Very good! Thanks 01:29:02 Laura Sheehy: Great session! 01:29:19 Laura Sheehy: Can we save the chat? 01:29:32 Laura Sheehy: Cool!!!! 01:30:17 Scott Williams: I will definitely be there for the HyFlex one - very curious about it 01:30:26 Scott Williams: Not going to make next week’s session. 01:30:33 Laura Sheehy: You Rock!!!
