The Challenge We Saw
Back in 1996, distance learning professionals across Texas were working in isolation.
Despite shared challenges and innovative learning technology solutions, there was no accessible way for education technology professionals to connect, share knowledge, and learn from each other across different sectors and institutions.
Our late Founding President Don Foshee observed the need for “an accessible clearinghouse of useful information to be shared by all distance learning practitioners in a non-biased, timely way that transcends fragmented special interests.”
How We Became the Solution
Education technology leaders from Texas schools, government agencies, corporations, and technology companies came together to establish the Texas Distance Learning Association as the first statewide organization bridging diverse digital learning professionals.
Evolving with the field: As technology transformed education, so did we. In 2022, we evolved our name to the Texas Digital Learning Association to better reflect the transformation from “distance learning” to the broader digital learning landscape we serve today.
Today, we define digital learning broadly to encompass all professionals and technology tools employed in effective digital education, supporting everyone from educators to corporate trainers across Texas.
Our Growth & Impact
Since our first annual meeting on January 30, 1996, TxDLA has grown under dedicated leadership and hardworking members. We facilitate sharing information, services, expertise, research, and peer networking among constituents across Texas and beyond.
From our first independent conference in Waco in 1999 to today’s premier events serving 700+ digital learning professionals, we’ve maintained our tradition of excellence in providing access to education technology resources and professional networking.

How is TxDLA funded?
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, TxDLA is funded through membership dues, conference registrations, certificate program fees, and partnership support. All revenue supports our mission to advance digital learning.
Can I get involved beyond membership?
Absolutely! We welcome volunteers for committee work, conference planning, journal submissions, presentation proposals, and leadership roles. Many of our board members started as active volunteers.
