My Challenge: I was part of a team of two in Instructional Technology as the only instructional designer, LMS admin, and faculty development coordinator at a rural college—basically juggling flaming torches while trying to keep up with the latest in digital learning. I felt like I was working in a silo, searching for answers in the dark and hoping I didn’t reinvent the wheel every time.

How TxDLA Helped: Now I have this dynamic network of educators who get it. I’ve found my people! The connections I’ve made through TxDLA led me to an informal Blackboard user group that has been invaluable for course design and data insights. Whether it’s cutting-edge tools, policy updates, or just encouragement from folks who’ve been there, TxDLA has become my go-to space for ideas, inspiration, and real connection.

My Transformation: For several years now, the TxDLA OER community gave me both the push and the practical tools I needed to lead campus-wide initiatives—most recently meeting our OER goals. And co-presenting with Honorlock helped me take the conversation about ethical AI in education to the next level. Learning how to move from FOMO to JOMO (Joy of Missing Out) in digital learning helped me refocus and prioritize what really matters for my faculty. Sharing it with others at TxDLA started some amazing conversations.

My Challenge: Coming from outside the digital learning world, I needed guidance from day one in my journey. My first day in education I attended a Regional TxDLA Meeting.

How TxDLA Helped: TxDLA guided me from day one in my journey, providing the foundation I needed as someone new to the field.

My Transformation: I have unlimited resources because of TxDLA. I am able to reach out across the state to experts when I am stuck, need guidance, or bounce an idea off of. I am able to see the great things others are doing and able to take those ideas to help my faculty or staff. Being involved in leadership positions with TxDLA has helped me grow professionally and led me to where I am today.

My Challenge: When I first joined TxDLA in 2008, it was because I began working for the Pasadena ISD virtual school. I was looking for ideas, support, resources, and guidance beyond the great team that I worked with in Instructional Technology.

How TxDLA Helped: TxDLA has brought together a group of like-minded people that not only became friends but became trusted confidants for learning and sharing ideas. As I moved into completing my MS and my EdD degrees, this group began to hold more value in helping me as a professional in the digital learning space.

My Transformation: After attending my first Leadership Workshop, I was ready to join the team in a more advanced way. From PD co-chair, to Executive Partnership Development Chair and now the 25-26 President-elect, I know my professional path with TxDLA will continue to grow. Also, I have learned so much about accessibility in both digital and in-person learning environments. The work I do has been positively impacted by the people who share and support my learning so that I can make a positive change for others.

My Challenge: When I first stepped into my role leading Educational Technology, it felt like I was building the plane mid-flight. I had a vision for transforming digital learning at my college, but I was missing the community and perspective to really take it to the next level.

How TxDLA Helped: TxDLA gave me that community—and then some. I found a network of peers who challenge, inspire, and genuinely support each other. Through it, I’ve become a more confident, collaborative leader and built real momentum behind our projects.

My Transformation: TxDLA didn’t just amplify my work—it gave it a platform. What started as hallway conversations turned into a podcast (DEscussions), and somehow TxDLA even decided my blog musings were worth sharing.

Where I Am Today: Thanks to TxDLA, I’ve brought back real, actionable ideas that reshaped how we support faculty. From redesigning our Tier One online training to launching student-focused video series and virtual recruiting events, nearly everything I’m proud of has been influenced—directly or indirectly—by conversations and collaboration through this community.

My Challenge: As a librarian transitioning to instructional design, I initially felt isolated and overwhelmed by the rapid tech changes. Finding relevant resources in online learning was a challenge even for this librarian. 

How TxDLA Helped: My library mentor recommended TxDLA as a valuable resource to expand my knowledge and connect with others in this field. I found a welcoming and supportive community of educators and technologists facing similar challenges.

My Transformation: Coming back to TxDLA this past year after a long break has helped me see what a game-changer this organization has been for my professional journey. Through TxDLA conferences and online events, I’ve discovered invaluable new tools and innovative pedagogical approaches that have enhanced my career as a designer and teacher. The conferences have been incredibly impactful, providing invaluable networking opportunities and connecting me with a vibrant community that leaves me feeling recharged and motivated.
